I walked a short distance and then heard voices.

I ran down and found Lenton, McCarthy, Simmons & a Chinese man.
He was lying on the ground with his head towards me.
I caught his wrist and he tried to bite me.
We turned him over, took a limb each and carried him out.
He struggled to get free and got his face into the water. I found he had caught McCarthy by private parts.
We carried him out of tunnel.
At entrance to tunnel he went limp.
We hoisted him out and applied artificial respiration.
I can't say how deep the water was.
When he broke away he fell face down in the water and made no attempt to get out.

One of the men who carried accused out of tunnel.
I identified him on 9th July.
Accused seemed to me to put his head deliberately into the water.
We had to hold him out of the water.

On 22nd June I was on sentry duty on No.3 Bridge.
I heard shouts so I ran to the bridge and looked down.
I saw a European boy washed down the nullah.
I ran down to tunnel entrance and saw the boy Michael Pine
and a Chinese go into the tunnel side by side.
Accused is the man I then saw.
I identified him at parade on the 9th July.
I had never seen him betwem those two times.
The boy was on his back.
The Chinese was half sitting up and I thought he was trying to save the boy.
I went to married quarters and sent Lenton down tunnel.
I then got a rickshaw and with Private O'kelly went to the V.R.C. where nullah runs into sea.
O'Kelly swam out and brought boy ashore.
The boy was Michael Pine.
The Chinese was making no attempt to get out of stream.

Signed out at that time.
I saw a crowd near the nullah.
I went to have a look and I saw

In consequence of what I heard I doubled to gate in Queen's Rd. I met Sellers and we took rickshaw to V.R.C.
About 20 yards out I saw an abject.
I dived in and swam out and found it was a boy.
He moaned when I caught him.
I brought him ashore and he was sent to hospital.
It was Michael Pine.
